Pan Orthodox Divisions/Unity

Excerpt from the Resolutions of the 2019 Annual Diocesan Assembly of the Eastern American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church (here):

THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that we express our prayerful support to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry, the head of the autonomous Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and to his hierarchs, priests, monasticsand faithful people, in the struggle for the preservation of peace and unity in the Church. At the same time, we express great regret over the misunderstanding and division among Orthodox brethren. These divisions and misunderstandings are most visible to us who live in the Diaspora and who have, until recently, had the opportunity to daily witness the unity of the Church through the joy of Pan-Orthodox gatherings. Sadly, this year the divisions are visible and require additional prayers of all of us for peace and unity.

  1. On the contrary, the greatest danger to Orthodox unity is the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s novel ecclesiology which gives it the right to intervene anywhere in the world, in any church’s territory, without consultation or consent from other churches.

  2. Orthodox Christians need to convey support for the autonomous Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which was recently granted its independence from the Moscow Patriarchate by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and the Synod
    of Orthodox Patriarchs.
Russia especially needs to accept the new autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church and to stop trying to regain its centuries-long control of that church. A supportive role towards the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by Russia — and indeed
by all predominantly Orthodox nations — will enhance the unity, role, and brotherhood of all Orthodox Christian churches, in addition to avoiding any un-Christian division.
