Earthly cares

“How long can a ship sail being fully loaded with heavy cargo? Don’t you know that one Holy Father, when asked what it means  to have our minds scattered with thoughts and cares, replied that it’s a godless life? Didn’t you hear that the “soul which has not freed itself of earthly cares will neither truly love God nor will it appropriately revolt against the devil” Diadochos of Photiki, A Word on Asceticism, ch. 88). And if all those years, from the time of Adam until the end of the world, are not enough for man to make sure he enters the Kingdom of Heaven, as Jeremiah calls the “time of trouble for Jacob” (Jer. 30:7), then, therefore, think well of the years of your short life of which only a few moments is spent caring for your soul and obtaining the spiritual and heavenly gifts, and all the years wasted on vanity.”

St. Nikodemos the Hagiorite (of the Holy Mountain)
