Kinds of Temptation

“Brother, there is one kind of temptation for which we are responsible; and there is another kind of temptation that occurs by God’s permission.  The kind for which we are responsible is harmful to the soul, and – concerning this – the Apostle James exclaimed: ‘Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God; for God cannot be tempted with evil.’  [James 1:13ff]  The kind that occurs by God’s permission is beneficial to the soul, for it occurs to test a man’s character; and such testing brings a man to hope, and hope does to put to shame, as it is written [Romans 5:3-5].  He who, through hope in God, is not put to shame by temptations, has been saved by the power of the Lord.”
