Calculating Easter – For Dummies

  1. Catchy, but not true. The difference is not determined by the date of Passover as celebrated by the Jews (the injunction “not with the Jews” means “ignore what the Jews are doing”), but by the difference in the Paschal tables used in the East and West. Neither of the tables is really based on observation of the celestial events, but on somewhat different conventions and assumptions. Throw in the fact that March 20=April 2, or March 21=April 3 on the Julian Calendar, and we have more reason to differ. The Paschal tables used in the East just happen to make Pascha always fall after Passover as observed by Jews today.

Nonetheless, a blessed Holy Week and Pascha to all!
