No more effective prayer than the liturgy

I stole this from a parish e-mailing of the Russian Church Abroad. An interesting directive from the patriarch….:

“At the directive of our patriarch at a pastoral conference in 2008 and with the advice of preeminent liturgical theologians the priests of the Russian Orthodox Church are advised that molebens and panikhidas should not be served after the Divine Liturgy.  They advise us that the Divine Liturgy offers the all-encompassing prayer of the Church for all people in all needs and that a molebens or a panikhida in conjunction with the Liturgy could indicate a lack of faith in the prayers offered at the supreme mystery of the Church, the Divine Liturgy.  There could be no more effective prayer for anyone than that offered at the Divine Liturgy.  Prayers offered at molebens and panikhidas are by all means beneficial, but it is appropriate that they be served only on days when the Divine Liturgy is not celebrated.  On Memorial Saturdays the typicon prescribes that a general panikhida be served the day before the Memorial Divine Liturgy.  It is also appropriate to serve molebens on days before or after the celebration of a saint but not on the day of the Divine Liturgy.  You are encouraged to ask for molebens and panikhidas, and a priest will schedule and serve the service on a day when the Divine Liturgy is not celebrated.”

    In some churches in our diocese there seems to be a practice of serving a Litiya/Artoklasia after the Liturgy, instead of at Vespers, and it strikes me as weird and anticlimactic.

  2. A little random, though God knows I would’ve appreciated a shorter Sunday morning when I lived in Russia 🙂 – between the length of the services, the number of them, and the number of communicants thing could take quite a while!
