God has given us a great gift

From a homily delivered by Fr. Stephen Zaremba, a priest in the Eastern American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church:

“We have come, brothers and sisters, to the tenth and last commandment which God gave to the Prophet Moses on Mt. Sanai. The first nine commandments taught us what to or what we dare not do. But the tenth goes further and teaches us to keep watch over the desires of the heart. A man’s heart is a treasury and the type of treasure gathered in that treasury depends upon the desire of each person’s heart. He who desires good gathers a good treasure, and he who desires evil gathers an evil treasure. Each of us has the power to choose what he wants, for God has given us a great gift, the gift of free will. How are we to recognize what is beneficial to desire and what is harmful? God shows us what is good for He alone is Good. He gives us commandments that we may know what is good. Whoever chooses to keep the commandments of God knows what is good while he who chooses  to disobey the commandments of God knows what is evil.”
