Natural Disaster or Nature’s Wrath

While Iranians say that the Eyjafjallajokull eruption was not only God’s doing but a suggestion is made “that the problems created by the volcano are akin to God’s own sanction against EU countries”, one Iranian cleric, Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedigi, gave a more scientific explanation on why earthquakes occur:

“Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes…”.

Actually, as women took to the streets baring their breasts in protest of the above claim the earth shook in Taiwan (photo above). Was the cleric on to something? You be the judge.

In the meantime, you can read about both stories here:

  1. That’s the problem with statements like that. According to that logic we should all die in a plane crash, an earthquake or whatever “for we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23).

  2. Well if that’s the case, that, “many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes”, I wonder what cause the 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Iran in 2003 which killed 26,271 people?

  3. This pronouncement by the Muslim cleric is the Islamic version of the same kind of thing in rabbinical Judaism, where it is said that such and such a violation of God’s commandments causes this or that calamity. The Talmud is full of this kind of stuff.

It is exactly this kind of thinking that Jesus rejected in the incident where the disciples asked Him who had sinned, the man himself, or his parents, to have caused him to be born blind (I’m going from memory here, so forgive me if I’ve got the ailment wrong).

I hadn’t heard any of this news about the earthquake in Taiwan or the women’s protest of bare breasts, but if women bare their breasts in public, that hardly causes earthquakes. The number of topless bars in any city worldwide should have caused the end of the world as we know it by the application of countless massive earthquakes all over the globe. That is just not how God works.
