On Vacation

One of the treats of going on vacation is visiting brother clergy. This time we visited Fr. Ljubisa Brnjos of St. Petka Serbian Orthodox Church in Orlando. A wonderful man with a highly enthusiastic and dedicated popadija. They have three children, but after the long Holy week and Bright Monday weekend they were back in school by Tuesday. Like many of our parishes in warmer climates (at least in the Eastern Diocese) it’s a struggling one.
One thing that Father brought to the community, in the form of fund-raisers, is candlemaking. I’ve never seen one like this, though. The candles are made by feeding a sausage maker with beeswax (not fully melted). The candles are 100% pure beeswax and, as one of his parishioners pointed out, they’re the cheapest out there. I realize that just about everyone makes candles and all parishes (it’s mostly monasteries that are in the business) need support but if there’s anyone out there that doesn’t have a candle supplier and wants to help a struggling parish check out their website and www.svetapetka.org and give them a call for more info and prices.
